Long-Term Care Homes Are Meeting Canada’s Target for Safer Antipsychotic Use

May 22, 2026

32 long-term care homes across Canada have been certified for meeting the national target for appropriate use of antipsychotic medications.

Across Canada, 24.4 percent of long-term care residents are on antipsychotics potentially inappropriately. In 2025, the Appropriate Use Coalition, a group of 10 national and provincial organizations working to improve medication safety, declared that no more than 15 per cent of long-term care residents should be on these medications without a diagnosis of psychosis.

These medications come with serious risks, including stroke, pneumonia, falls, fractures, and even death. Achieving the 15 per cent target is estimated to result in 21,000 fewer people receiving potentially inappropriate antipsychotics across Canada.

The 32 homes achieving this benchmark are among the very best in Canada for using resident-centred approaches for managing dementia-related behaviours. Instead of over-medicating residents, the homes being recognized often rely on non-pharmacological approaches to improve residents’ wellbeing and safety. Examples of these approaches include pet therapy, music therapy, regular care plan reviews, and wellness chairs that offer calming sensory experiences for residents.
